Why Manchester United and Liverpool are the only clubs who can get Alex Song
Former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song could be on the move this January as he struggles to force his way into the Barcelona first team.
Song is having a dreadful spell in Spain, which has seen him feature in just two games so far this season with sub appearances in the Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup.
The Premier League is likely to be one of his first choice destinations because it’s a league he knows well and he’ll still have several friends in England from his time with the Gunners.
Manchester United secured the big signing of Marouane Fellaini at the end of the last transfer window but their midfield is still lacking an extra player.It opens up the question of which big Premier League sides could realistically go after him and the two most obvious choices are Manchester United and Liverpool.
They need someone at the top of that midfield doing something differently and while Song is a defensively minded midfielder, his presence at Old Trafford would allow David Moyes to push Fellaini further forward to support the attack.
A more advanced position is where Fellaini bagged 11 goals last season but he’s been used in more of a holding role by Moyes so far this campaign.
Liverpool are an obvious choice for two reasons; they don’t have a defensive midfielder with his physique and presence and he brings experience to a side where the manager uses younger players frequently.
Lucas and Jordan Henderson have both done admirable jobs in front of Liverpool’s back four and the presence of Song should just make them better because it releases them to more natural central midfield roles.
Song would offer great protection to either back four and while the other top sides will be alerted by his availability, they won’t get caught up in bidding wars.
Chelsea already have two defensive midfield options in the form of John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien, as well as Ramires who frequently takes up a holding position in midfield.
Tottenham are well stocked up in the middle of their side having drafted in midfielders over the summer, which has left them with arguably the best group of middle men in the Premier League.
Spurs have Paulinho to play that role in front of the current back four and another good option in Etienne Capoue, when fit.
Arsenal themselves would be tempted by re-signing Song but Arsene Wenger’s decision to draft in Mathieu Flamini has turned out to be a master stroke.
Flamini is playing the current role Song would perform in the side brilliantly and the Gunners have cover across their midfield, with the only possible position needing an extra man on either wing.
If Manchester United added song and a more creative midfielder this January, they would have an even better group of players than they have now while Brendan Rodgers has already admitted that Liverpool will be looking for reinforcements.

We already have Allen to cover for Lucas!! I would suggest a cover for Coutinho,a permanent left wing, aright wing and a right back and a possible replacement for Suarez!!!
