Liverpool defender probably out for the season
Liverpool's preparations for this weekend's Merseyside derby have suffered a blow after defender Jose Enrique was ruled out with a long-term knee injury.
Jose Enrique could require surgery on a knee injury that is likely to keep him out of action for the foreseeable future.
The Liverpool left-back has struggled for fitness for large chunks of this season and it looks like that is set to continue.
The Spaniard will miss this weekend’s Merseyside derby against Everton and is expected to be out even longer than that.
Manager Brendan Rodgers revealed that the former Newcastle star had been carrying the knee problem for sometime and that the Reds had now taken the decision to get it fixed.
He told talkSPORT: “Jose Enrique has been struggling for a little while with an injury.
“He will probably need an operation. It’s a blow for us because he’s a very talented player.”
He added: “In fairness to him, he’s put himself out for the team to go out and play.
“But he was suffering with it and we just felt it was best for him to come out and make it right.”
Rodgers will be forced to rely on Aly Cissokho, on loan at Anfield from Valencia, as his first-choice left.
