Arsenal or Liverpool: who provides a better fit for Keisuke Honda?
The transfer window may only recently have slammed shut, but that hasn’t stopped the papers from continuing to pump their transfer tattle into the rumourmill. It seems we can’t go a single day without a spot of light speculation.
We recently heard from The Star, that Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool could all be set to ‘swoop’ for Keisuke Honda this January.
If you’re a fan of a Premier League club, there’s a good chance that you’ve heard Honda’s name before. That’s because the 27-year-old has been linked to a whole swathe of British clubs throughout his playing career. Somehow, however, the speculation has never converted into anything tangible and a move has never happened.
Instead, the Japanese International has spent the last three years in Russia, playing for CSKA Moscow. Prior to this, he spent two years with VVV-Venlo in the Eredivisie.
At both clubs he has managed to convince. His versatility, technical mastery and quick thinking make sure that he has always stood out from his peers. He’s capable of playing in the holding role, as a play-maker, or as a secondary striker. He’s not afraid to take players on, has the ability to beat his man and he’s also handy in dead-ball situations.
Whilst at VVV-Venlo he scored 26 goals in 74 appearances from a central position. At CSKA Moscow, he has thus far scored 26 in 107 games (including 3 this season!).
Suffice to say, I think he’s ready to make a step up to a bigger club. Honda’s contract is set to expire during the January transfer window. He’ll be a very attractive proposition to a number of different clubs. Perhaps he’s finally about to get his move to the Premier League?
The player himself looks to be ready to move on: “I have many choices, but I want to compare as much as possible. I don’t think there’s a chance I will stay in Russia.” (Source: The Star)
Of the clubs interested, Arsenal have just signed Mesut Ozil, whilst Everton have brought in James McCarthy. Liverpool, on the other hand, spent most of the summer strengthening their defense and could probably use another midfielder.
Given that he’s a free signing, that would immensely improve the strength in depth of Liverpool’s squad, this should be something of a no-brainer for Brendan Rodgers.
There’s likely to be a fair amount of competition for the player’s signature this January, so let’s hope Brendan’s capable of convincing him to come to Anfield.
