Ian Ayre has revealed that Liverpool are planning to open talks with Luis Suárez over a new deal for the Uruguay striker.
The 26-year-old made his return from his
10-game suspension on Wednesday as the Reds were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United in the third round of the League Cup at
Old Trafford.
Suárez’s future was a source of relentless
speculation over the summer after he declared his desire to leave Anfield for a
club in the Champions League.
But following his return to action,
Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre insisted that the club are intent on
keeping hold of their prized asset.
“We genuinely always wanted Luis to be
here this season,” Ayre told Sky Sports
News.
“We wanted him to continue to be here,
continue to contribute because he’s such a brilliant player. We’re not a selling
club. We’re here to win and move forward and we see Luis as an important part of
that.”
“At the appropriate time we will have
[contract] talks with Luis and his advisers.
“I’m absolutely certain in the summer or
approaching the next summer, we’ll have a conversation with Luis.”
