Is this Liverpool deal one of the smartest of the summer?
Last Sunday could prove to have been a very important day for Liverpool football club. First, let’s get the obvious out the way: the Reds beat their big rivals, Manchester United and climbed to the summit of the Premier League table.
Here they’ll stay until the end of the International break. What a fantastic position for the club to be in, three games into the season.
This is especially true given that Manchester City and Arsenal have already slipped up, United look a little lackluster and Chelsea look overly defensive. The Reds, on the other hand, look to be brimming with options and attacking endeavour.
Brendan Rodgers has spent the summer constructing a competitive squad and now the club is reaping the rewards. For the first time in a long while, Liverpool have strength in depth.
United, on the other hand, couldn’t contend with the Reds and didn’t have enough creativity in their midfield to force a result.
But Sunday didn’t just contain a big victory for Liverpool. It also happened to be the day that the club made an important signing – one that’s likely to have a significant impact this season.
Moses watched Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over United at Anfield and must have been pleased with what he saw. He’ll be joining a forward-thinking, attacking-minded team, where he’ll get a considerable amount of game-time. That just wouldn’t be the case if he chose to stay at Stamford Bridge.
Though he hasn’t exactly thrived at Chelsea, he did make 43 appearances for the Blues last season (many of which were as a substitute) and he even chipped in with 10 goals.
Those are pretty impressive figures for a 22-year-old.
He’s also extremely versatile and can play pretty much anywhere across the front-line. Still, he’s probably best suited to play down the flanks.
As a winger, he’ll add pace and power to Liverpool’s forward line-up. On his day, he’s a real handful and can give opposition defenders nightmares. He’s certainly going to provide a marked improvement on the likes of Stewart Downing (good riddance!)
Given that he only cost Liverpool £1.5m (plus his wages), Brendan Rodgers has pulled off a genuine bargain. Moses must be chomping at the bit for a bigger role at a top team. He’ll have that at Anfield and he’ll be given an opportunity to excel.
