Glen Johnson will be offered a new deal by Liverpool but he must accept a cut on his reported £139,000-a-week salary.
Johnson’s contract, which he signed when he joined from Portsmouth in 2009, expires next June and Brendan Rodgers says the Anfield giants will be opening talks.
However, its understood Liverpool will not be prepared to match the England right-back’s current wages.
“It’s something the club will take up at the right time,” said Rodgers. “I’m not sure where it’s at.”
Johnson had the protective cast removed from his injured ankle on Monday and should be back towards the end of next month.
“Glen is the type of player you don’t realise what you’re missing until he’s not in the team,” added Rodgers.
“He was outstanding against Manchester United so it will be great when we get him back. He’s got the cast off his foot now and he’s working hard to be back in the next few weeks.”
