Liverpool, Arsenal, Suarez - who holds the upper hand?
It has been one of the biggest transfer stories to date but who really has control when it comes to the future of Luis Suarez?
Sometimes in football we just take what we hear for granted, the training ground bust-ups, the transfer rumours and the contract negotiations, but one thing that has bugged me and probably countless Liverpool fans in the last few days, surrounds the contract of want-away striker Luis Suarez.
As we all know, Liverpool don't want to sell their star forward, despite a number of bids from rivals Arsenal, the Merseyside team don't have to sell a contracted player so they hold the upper hand.
That is until we hear these bids appear to be high enough for Suarez to declare his interest, and publicly state, that he was promised by the club that he could leave for a team with Champions League football and providing that they triggered his buy-out clause, of over £40m, all this, with Arsenal fitting the bill, would suggest that the ball is clearly in his court then.
Having thought more closely about it, it isn't, and the reason, if Suarez is as good as we are led to believe and is a world class talent, which I myself believe to be true, then why aren't teams queuing up to buy him?
The Uruguayan would make a great addition to any team and with him publicly stating that he is hungry for top-level football, you can only imagine that those with money, the PSG's and Real Madrid's of this world are already content with their starting 11.
Arsene Wenger has often been criticised,for not spending when he has money in the kitty, and for relying too heavily on his scouting and youth programmes, but despite a barren stretch he's brought his fair share of success to the North London team.
But for me this could be his greatest coup, he's left it late, waited for the others to show their hands and when the money from other clubs is gone and with time running out in the transfer window, Wenger has played is cards, and what a hand he has.
It appears that he has unsettled the player and the club and should a deal not be forced through in the next few weeks then one will surely be made in January, when the price may be lower and more importantly, they won't suffer from the 6 games he misses as part of his ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic, last season.
Maybe Liverpool can be accused off making false statements and promises or maybe Suarez has misinterpreted his contract or some off the record talks but the truth of the matter is, Arsenal are closer to controlling his destiny than most.
I like so many Reds fans, won't believe the contracts and clauses until we see them, and by the time we do, well Suarez himself might not be in the red of Liverpool but that of the Gunners
