Brendan Rodgers confirms interest in PSG star

Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho is a target for Liverpool and Barcelona

Liverpool hope to ease their defensive injury crisis with the signing of Paris Saint-Germain centre-back - and reported Barcelona target - Mamadou Sakho, reports the Daily Mail.

The 23-year-old France international has been heavily linked with a move away from Parc des Princes this summer, after falling further down the first-team pecking order, following the big-money arrival of Marquinhos from AS Roma.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed last night in the aftermath of the Merseyside club's 4-2 victory over Notts County in the Capital One Cup, that Sakho is an Anfield target.

With injuries to two of Liverpool's defensive summer signings, Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho, the Premier League side might be forced to dip into the transfer market again before the close of next week's window.

"Kolo Toure has overstretched his groin, so we need to assess that, which doesn't look so good to be honest," said Rodgers. "It was obviously disappointing with Cissokho getting injured so early on - he was distraught coming off as you can imagine."

Barcelona's search for a new centre-back has also linked them with a move for Sakho, who has 14 caps for the French national team.

However, both the Spanish club and Liverpool might be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere, with PSG chairman Nasser al-Khelaifi stating the Ligue 1 club's intentions to retain the defender's services.

"He is a child from the club, just like Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, players you can hardly imagine wearing another shirt," he is quoted by Sky Sports.

"I am a bit surprised to see he wants to leave. I had a talk with him. My position is very clear and he knows it: we want to keep him and we will do our best for that."
