Willian Now Set for Chelsea Move?
After looking as though they'd lost out to Spurs in the Willian race, Liverpool now sit idly by and watch as Chelsea enter the picture at the last minute, with the player reportedly in advanced discussion about a Stamford Bridge switch.
What we know after Brendan Rodgers' fairly flat press conference earlier in the day is that Liverpool's interest in Willian will ultimately amount to nothing. After leading the chase for much of the immediate post-Anzhi financial meltdown, the club were confident that they would see their big-money bid pay off, only to see Tottenham get involved and push themselves to what appeared to be the brink of officially sealing the Brazilian's signature. Only now that all looks to be in jeopardy, as Chelsea suddenly emerge as the club set to bring the player aboard.
From Sky Sports, among others:So first it's nobody because Anzhi are rich and money is evil, then it's Liverpool with a statement of intent and finally getting their marquee summer signing, then it's Spurs because they have Gareth Bale money and more intent and [Liverpool's scouts joke], and now it's the Premier League's old money (or at least older money) swooping in at the last minute to bring in another attacking playmaker because fourteen of them isn't enough.
At least for Liverpool supporters there can be some solace--disappointing as this all has been--in knowing that no matter the twists and turns this increasingly silly saga takes, there won't be any further hopes dashed. There's also the small comfort that if the player does end up at Stamford Bridge, it's relatively more palatable, as that'd be one of the Premier League title-challengers getting better whereas a Spurs move would see a side that Liverpool hope to rival for European places strengthened. Silver linings. Woo-hoo.
Plus doing the "Juan Mata to Liverpool isn't a thing could it maybe be a thing OMG it's a thing?!?" deal was so much fun a few summers ago, we might as well latch on to the infinitesimally small/no way buddy chance that a Willian move to Chelsea would signal the end of an out-of-favor Mata's Blues career and Liverpool could make him their summer blockbuster. That could totally happen, right?
It's not like reality is worth paying attention to anyway.
