Liverpool close on Shay Given

Liverpool close on Shay Given

Aston Villa keeper Shay Given is closing in on a surprise move to Liverpool - reports

Aston Villa keeper Shay Given is wanted by Liverpool, according to the Mirror.
Brendan Rodgers wants the veteran stopper to provide cover for summer signing Simon Mignolet, and with Given's first-team opportunities at Villa Park severely limited, a deal is close to being struck.
Villa are happy to let Given move on - with three years left on a £60,000-a-week contract, the midlands-based club are keen to get the Republic of Ireland international off their wage bill at the earliest opportunity.

And with American keeper Brad Guzan having cemented his position as the Villians' first-choice keeper, Given's future looked pretty bleak - until now.
Following the loss of Pepe Reina to Napoli on a season-long loan, Rodgers wants an experienced figure to provide cover and competition for the no.1 berth at Anfield, and Given is understandably keen to make the move.
With Villa keen to offload the former Newcastle keeper, Liverpool are lining up a cut price move for Given, with the Reds looking to bring him to Anfield for a nominal fee.
